Tosen Ryo, a seven-year-old gelding by the legendary sire Deep Impact, is set to compete in the Niigata Daishoten (Grade III, 2000m turf, for 4-year-olds and up) at Niigata Racecourse, aiming to extend his sire’s remarkable legacy.

Deep Impact’s progeny have won a total of 298 JRA graded stakes races, spanning an impressive 16 consecutive years—from Danon Ballad’s victory in the 2010 Radio Nikkei Hai to Deep Monster’s triumph in the 2025 Kyoto Daishoten. This streak ranks among the longest in JRA history, trailing only the 19-year runs of Partholon and Kurofune, the 18-year streaks of Northern Taste, Brian’s Time, and Fuji Kiseki, and the 17-year stretches of Sunday Silence, Stay Gold, and King Kamehameha.

Tosen Ryo earned his spot in open-class company by winning the Kaiji Stakes in October 2024. Although he has yet to visit the winner’s circle in seven subsequent starts, he has been a consistent performer, finishing second twice in listed races and running a solid third in the 2025 Epsom Cup. His most recent outing in the Osaka Castle Stakes saw him break slowly and finish seventh, 0.9 seconds behind the winner, but that performance does not reflect his true ability. With that race serving as a needed comeback effort, he is expected to show improvement and could be a serious contender if the race unfolds in his favor.

While the number of active Deep Impact offspring has dwindled, the sire’s influence remains strong this year. Deep Monster won the Amir Trophy in Qatar this February, extending the overall consecutive graded stakes win streak to 17 years. However, when limited to JRA graded stakes alone, 15 Deep Impact descendants have tried this year, with the best result being a pair of second-place finishes: Keiai Sena in the Kokura Daishoten and Sailun in the Nikkei Shinshun Hai. Victory has remained elusive—until now. Tosen Ryo has the opportunity to finally achieve that milestone, delivering his sire’s 300th graded stakes win and delighting the late champion’s legacy.
