Pep Guardiola has hailed Jeremy Doku as “extraordinary” after the Belgian winger’s stunning goal helped Manchester City secure a dominant 3-0 win over Brentford on Saturday, keeping the Premier League title race alive.
Doku broke through Brentford’s stubborn defense in the 60th minute at the Etihad Stadium, curling a superb shot into the top corner. The 21-year-old has now scored four goals in his last three appearances across all competitions for City, including two spectacular strikes in Monday’s 3-3 draw with Everton.
That draw at Goodison Park meant City no longer control their own destiny in the title race, but Doku’s form has ensured they remain in hot pursuit of leaders Arsenal. Guardiola’s side are two points behind the Gunners, who face a struggling West Ham on Sunday.
“Jeremy is extraordinary in many areas. He looks like a complete player, and of course, he can still improve,” Guardiola said. “He’s always had that incredible ability to dribble, create chances, and link up with teammates—he’s outstanding. But now he’s helping us win games. I’m delighted to have a player who brings so much energy and can score goals.”
Arsenal will be crowned champions if they win their remaining three matches against West Ham, Burnley, and Crystal Palace.
“We’ll see—it’s no longer in our hands. We’ll do our job. We weren’t perfect against Everton. We’ll take care of our business and wait,” Guardiola added. “We struggled in the opening minutes today, but after that we played a great game. Especially down the left in the first half, and on both flanks in the second.”
Guardiola acknowledged that City’s failure to close out certain games this season may ultimately cost them. “Everton was the real test—we were 3-1 down and emotions took over. We gave away the second half. That happened many times last season; we’re more solid now but still conceding,” he explained. “That’s football—it’s about how you respond. I’m satisfied with how we’ve done that.”
