Manchester United have reignited negotiations with Atalanta regarding a potential move for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano confirmed that “contacts took place” in recent days and discussions remain ongoing between the two clubs. The Red Devils are fully aware of Ederson’s £39 million release clause, though no deal has reached an advanced stage yet.
Interestingly, Ederson had already agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid back in March, but that transfer stalled after the Spanish side refused to meet Atalanta’s valuation. Atleti subsequently shifted their focus to another Manchester United target, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes, who is expected to leave Molineux following the club’s relegation.
Atletico’s withdrawal from the race for Ederson has opened the door for United, who have been weighing up both midfielders. The club’s hierarchy, led by Jason Wilcox and INEOS, have prioritised Premier League-proven talent over the past year, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha proving successful additions. This makes the pursuit of Ederson—who plays in Serie A—somewhat surprising compared to the homegrown option Gomes.
It remains unclear whether United will push ahead with a formal bid in the upcoming summer window, as scouts continue to monitor several midfield options.
