Valery Karpin Calls Up Manchester United Youth Captain to Russia Squad

Russia’s national football team head coach Valery Karpin has named a 36-man extended squad for upcoming friendly matches in late May and June, including Amir Ibragimov, the captain of Manchester United’s youth side and a Russia-eligible midfielder born in Dagestan.

The squad will face Egypt on May 28, Burkina Faso on June 5, and Trinidad and Tobago on June 9. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov was omitted as he is preparing for the Champions League final on May 30, while Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin has been selected.

Ibragimov, 18, previously captained Manchester United’s U-18 team and signed his first professional contract with the English club in April 2025. This season, he has made 11 appearances for the U-18s, scoring three goals, and also played once for the reserve team, finding the net. He has also represented England at U-15 and U-16 levels.

The Ibragimov family moved from Buynaksk, Dagestan, to the United Kingdom. His brothers, Muhammad and Ghazi, are also footballers, while his older brother Ibrahim competes in MMA.

Russia has only played friendlies since being suspended by UEFA and FIFA in 2022. In March, the team drew 0-0 with Mali and beat Nicaragua 3-1. Karpin has been in charge since 2021.
