Luka Modric will miss the remainder of the season after an accidental collision with Manuel Locatelli forced him off the pitch during Milan’s 0-0 draw against Juventus in the 79th minute. The Croatian midfielder underwent surgery on Monday, and according to the Croatian football federation, he should be fit to play in this summer’s World Cup.
“We are in constant contact with Milan’s medical staff, and in coordination with them and in agreement with Luka, we will closely monitor his recovery progress. Based on previous experience with similar injuries, we believe the captain will be ready to compete in the upcoming World Cup,” said Dr. Tomislav Vlahovic, the national team’s physician.
Coach Zlatko Dalic spoke with Modric and wished him a speedy recovery, the federation reported: “I spoke with Luka, wished him a successful surgery and, of course, a quick and full recovery. I am sure Luka will do everything possible to be ready for the World Cup, and we will give him all our support. I am confident the recovery will go as planned and that Luka will lead us as captain in another great competition this summer.”

“Tests revealed a fractured left cheekbone that required surgery, scheduled for the coming hours. Further details will be communicated after the operation,” Milan’s statement confirmed.
According to Sportske Novosti, “The captain will likely play in the World Cup wearing a protective mask. It is still unknown what type of recovery awaits him.” Modric, who left the pitch with an ice pack on his face, has a contract with the Rossoneri until June, but Milan is hopeful he will stay for another season.
